Osgoode Hall Student Senators
Representing Osgoode Amongst the Larger York University Community
Osgoode Hall Law School is situated on land which is the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations. The area known as Tkaronto has been care taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Huron-Wendat, and the Métis. It is now home to many Indigenous Peoples. We acknowledge the current treaty holders, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory is subject of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to peaceably share and care for the Great Lakes region.
What do we do?
The Senate is responsible for York University’s academic policies, University standards, and all operations pertaining to the University. The Senate consists of up to 168 elected and ex-officio members who are representatives of the York University community, two of whom are student representatives from Osgoode.
A focal point of the work undertaken by the Senate is found within the Senate committees. Some examples of these standing committees of the Senate are: Academic Policy, Planning and Research, Tenure and Promotions, Appeals, Awards, and the Academic Standards, Curriculum and Pedagogy Committee, among many others.
Student Senators are elected by their peers where, in addition to representing their respective faculties to the University at large, they sit on each of these committees as part of the Student Senator Caucus (SSC). The SSC meets as often as necessary but generally meets on the Wednesday before a Senate meeting to discuss items on the agenda.
Besides SSC and standing committee meetings, your Osgoode Student Senators oversee and facilitate the relationship between Osgoode Hall Law School and York University. They represent you at Senate meetings which occur monthly on the last Thursday of every month.
As Osgoode operates under York University, it is important to have a strong voice at Senate meetings to strengthen the dialogue between students and faculty of York and at Osgoode, and to ensure that important changes are advocated for, and strong stances are being taken for, or against, any University-wide policies that may affect Osgoode students.
Student Senators also remain in close contact with the other members of your student government at L&L and Caucus to ensure that the voices of Osgoode students are represented consistently and accurately.
